Yet the capability approach presents researchers with for midable difficulties, not least because it is intentionally left incomplete, and little guidance is available on its application. It is therefore necessary to make choices in order to apply the approach to a specific context. This paper will introduce the issue of social justice in a career development context, and metho dological challenges in researching capabilities. It will attempt to provide a rationale for methodological choices in four stages. Firstly, the choice of epistemology and ontology ; secondly, choices of level of analysis and disciplinary perspective ; thirdly, the choice of research methods. Focusing on the call for making young people more employable, the chapter relies on Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach and in particular on his key idea of ‘informational basis of judgement’ to reveal the postulates behind the benchmarks that assess progress toward the Education and Training Strategy. Taking up this plea, the chapter starts out by giving a brief description of the Lisbon Strategy as well as the Europe 2020 Strategy. In this perspective, it reports what progress in education and training– or lack of it – has taken place. The subsequent section introduces the concepts of “capability” and “Informational basis of judgement” derived from Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach (CA) in order to shed light on the normative postulates underlying the benchmarks promoted by the European Commission . One main focus lies in addressing limitations of these indicators with the aim of providing a practical instrument with which to assess and compare education and training performance. On the one hand, taking into account the quality of employability policies means considering the objectives of the policies themselves; on the other hand, investigating how and to what extent individualisation is actually delivered calls for a deeper analysis of the implementation process, where employability is interpreted and adapted. Grasping both aspects raises challenges dealing with the analytical approach to research on ALMPs. The paper aims at contributing to this methodological issue related to the cognitive and implementation dimensions of ALPMs by developing an analytical tool based on three ideal-types of employability. The contribution elaborates on the relevant analytical dimensions of the well-known Work-First and Human Capital approach by using the Capability Approach (CA) perspective (Nussbaum & Sen, 1993). The paper argues that the CA constitutes an added value for developing a new analytical tool for investigating employability policies because it: 1) identifies the underlying normative concept of employability against which quality can be assessed; 2) depicts the degree of individualisation actually implemented while going beyond a labour market-centred approach to ALMPs. Cette recherche s’intéresse aux conditions sociales d’accès à l’un ou à l’autre des statuts dans le cas d’un groupe professionnel, celui des personnels techniques travaillant auprès de fédérations sportives agréées par l’Etat, dont les représentants se partagent entre agents de la fonction publique et salariés de droit privé. Ce travail a été mené principalement par entretiens et suivant une approche par les capacités (capability approach).
